Introduction
Nobuyuki Muraki's "Island Fun - Shinsan Red" reinterprets mountainous landscapes from a unique perspective. The work utilizes a patchwork of color blocks and delicate lines, allowing the natural scenery to waver between the abstract and the concrete, presenting a distinctive geographic poetics. The contours of the mountains are clearly visible, yet their internal structures are deconstructed into vividly colored segments, enabling viewers to not only recognize the presence of the mountains visually but also to sense a certain artificial treatment of the landscape. This method of image processing evokes the etching techniques of Rembrandt, which create depth through lines and light, but in Muraki's work, this sense of layering is replaced by color, forming a more planar visual vocabulary.

In terms of color, the title "Shinsan Red" draws from Edo period dyeing techniques, using a vibrant red as the base tone of the piece. The red transitions from the mountain ridges into the sky, creating a strong symbolic meaning. This recalls the minimalist and exaggerated color presentation of Mount Fuji in Katsushika Hokusai's "Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji." Muraki modernly continues this depiction of natural landscapes, bestowing it with a new abstract layer.

This painting not only illustrates the shape of the mountain but also seems to explore the relationship between landscape, culture, and human intervention. Through map-like structured language, Muraki’s creation invites viewers to rethink the distance between nature and ourselves.
